href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/lacl/mp3/SusanFalcone120320.mp3">Susan Falcone Interview mp3 (38:20)

I’ve written before about the fact that the Universe is quite the Trickster. Yessiree. Yesterday was yet another example.

Some background: Susan Falcone is the inspiration behind my decision to make Self-Compassion the first of my 3 words for 2012. Plus I just have a humongous girl-crush on her, so I interviewed her back in March, as part of my ongoing (if sporadic) Inspiring Subscriber series. Thanks to my Self-Compassionate slow-down, it’s taken weeks to get the interview edited, which I find rather ironic.

But fine. Susan of all people would get this. As we discuss about 25 minutes into the interview, slowing down in order to treat yourself as well as you deserve to be treated means that things (ahem) slow down. I get that. Blog posts don’t always get up as quickly as I want. New courses and ebooks don’t always get birthed and out into the world as quickly as I want.

That kinda sucks, but on the other hand, my quality of life is waaaaaaay better. So overall, I’m good with it.

Sometimes, though, the Universe likes to drive the lesson home with a little more oomph, just to see if I’m really paying attention.

This is where we come back to yesterday.

Truthfully, it all started on Tuesday, which is when I’d originally intended to get Susan’s interview edited and loaded, scheduled for posting on Wednesday.

Except that all sorts of other things got in the way. And even though I’ve eased up a bit on my 11pm “in bed with lights out” rule from the Great Bedtime Experiment, when the choice is between self-care and staying up late to get stuff done that really doesn’t have to get done right now, I choose self-care. (We talk about this in the interview, too, btw.)

Which means that blog posts do not get posted on a rigid schedule in these parts.

Then Wednesday AND Thursday turned into one long string of meetings and phone conferences, and suddenly it was Thursday early evening, and I was finally finishing up those edits.

And I was actually fine with that. The interview would go up on Thursday night, and I’d still get to have Date Night with my sweetie, and all would be well with the world.

Except that that was the very moment that Trickster Universe chose to crash my iMac and wipe out 90 minutes worth of carefully crafted subtitle additions to the video interview.

Yep.

So. I had a choice. I could rant and rave (which, I’ll grant you, I did do a teensy weensy bit of), and spend the bulk of what was going to be Date Night scrambling to recreate all those carefully crafted subtitles, export the video, write the accompanying post, and get the damn thing published while it was still Thursday, goddammit …

Or I could say “To Hell with it — the subtitles are so not important in the scheme of things, and getting the damn thing published while it’s still Thursday is so not important in the scheme of things, so let’s go have Date Night, sweetie, and I’ll deal with it tomorrow!”

With a hat-tip and very broad wink to Trickster Universe, for ever-so-ironically using my interview with Susan about this very topic to hand me this decision, I chose the latter.

Well, in truth, my sweetie (aka Miracle Boyfriend — or MB for short) spent a good half hour working his technical magic trying to find a way to somehow salvage the lost data (which he’s still gung ho to figure out, being much more of an enthusiast for these kinds of challenges than I am [which is one reason why he's Miracle Boyfriend]), and then I said “Come on, let’s go get some dinner.”

And truly, all was well with the world.

It helped that Trickster Universe ever so conveniently provided me with the above story fodder at the same time it foiled my original plans. Neat, huh?

Trickster Universe has a sense of humor, but sometimes seems to have a heart, too.

Anyway, check out the interview. It was great fun, and all that time I spent on the (now lost) edits reminded me of what a freakin’ great conversation Susan and I had!

We discussed such things as the power of identity as a Certain Type of Creative, and how being tied to that identity can actually quash your creativity. And the difficulties — and gifts — of facing physical challenges.

And we talked a lot about self-compassion.

Have a watch. Or listen to the mp3 audio. Then let me know what you think.

Oh, and be sure to visit Susan over at Powering Possible, too. She rocks.

Tell me, where have you learned to bring more self-compassion to your life?
three words for 2012 is Self-Compassion. One way I’ve been practicing self-compassion is by making an effort to take care of myself physically. Like sleeping in til after noon on Friday to try and nip my cold in the bud. (Which made a huge difference, by the way.)

Being the gogogoGOGO sort (my top Strengthsfinder 2.0 strength is Achiever, so I come by it honestly), learning to slow down and take a nap is not easy for me.

Way harder, though, is the self-compassion to accept myself as enough, just as I am.

Turns out I’m not alone.

Brené Brown’s book, The Gifts of Imperfection, and her viral TED videos on shame and vulnerability, have made me much more aware of something I kinda already knew: we all feel like we’re not enough.

Something must have opened for me recently, though, because this week the Universe showed me, for the umpteenth time, that who I am, what I bring, really is enough, is good, is of benefit to others.

Yes, the Universe has tried to tell me this many times before. The difference is that this week I finally started to get it.

Here’s just some of what happened:

The Message of the EBook Cover

I wrote earlier about how my wonderful subscribers helped me see that my belief that my art couldn’t possibly make a good-enough ebook cover was a just my Inner Critic Gremlin talking. With their encouragement, and brilliant art direction from Seth Watkins, I threw out bland and generic, and went back to my drawing board. I worked through the hard, and found the real.

—————————————————————–

VERY LONG TANGENT!

Here’s a bit of the progression, in case you’re interested.

My publisher’s suggested design:

Lovely, but a young white woman on the cover felt to me like it might inadvertently make anyone who isn’t a young white woman feel like the book isn’t aimed at her.

So I decided to try my hand at some designs of my own. Still, the Inner Critic Gremlin had me convinced my own art wouldn’t work well. Stock photos — that was the way to do it right (I thought). These are what I cam up with:

Again, basically inoffensive, but still (except for the sticky notes design) implying a limited audience, whether by race, gender or age. And though I do find that happy toes image delightful, it doesn’t really fully express me and my message.

When your fans and followers ask you why your art isn’t on the cover, it becomes easier to unmask the Inner Critic Gremlin for the liar it is.

Back to the drawing board…

That’s when the brilliant and talented Seth got involved. Here are some of the images I sent him, this time using my own artwork (but still not “it” yet…):

<a

And he also included some art and graphics from my own site, which helped me see that, contrary to what I believed, I did have some very graphic art in my catalog! Namely this piece:

<a

Back to Photoshop I went, where I created this mockup, combining my artwork above and rainbow colors (the handmade look I would do later at my actual drawing board — this is just a concept sketch):

<a

We’re getting closer! And when I sent this to Seth, and he sent back this modification:

<a

He took my concept and made it exponentially more interesting! I knew we had it!

I then pulled out my calligraphy pens, watercolor paper and a cheap, Prang watercolor set and got to work. I scanned the resulting artwork into Photoshop, and (after much tweaking) this was the happy result:

Now back to our blog post already in progress…

—————————————————————–

Message from the Universe: your art, your unique expression, Melissa, is good enough. Is, in fact, better at expressing the unique message of your own writing than any generic stock photo design that you, or anyone else, could brew up.

(AND, a good art director can take what you already do well and make it waaaaaay better.)

Bonus Message: What your Right People want from you is what YOU naturally bring to the table.

The Message of the Group Coaching Call

My partner, Cory, was out of town on a well-deserved vacation, leaving me on my own to run our monthly group coaching call for our online course and community for artists, ArtEmpowers.Me. Surely people would feel cheated not to have his technical wizardry and marketing expertise on the call! Yes, I bring my own expertise, but my expertise is not his expertise, and he brings so much to these calls, I thought for sure a call led just by me would be a massive disappointment.

What happened instead was that the call serendipitously seemed to draw people with mindset-related questions (my genius zone), and I facilitated what turned into a really interesting, more philosophical, more mindset-than-marketing kind of discussion.

Which the people on the call really loved. (One even said it was the best call yet.)

Message from the Universe: What you naturally bring to the table is actually enough.

The Message of the Online Class

My other partner project, Playing Around Online, had its 3rd class meeting the following morning. My co-teacher and fellow Poobah of Play, Kelly Hevel, allowed the energy of the class to determine the class plan, veering from our intended curriculum when the conversation seemed to want us to do so. We allowed ourselves to be in the moment, to be in flow, to improvise – just bringing our full selves to the table and being fully present.

The response from everyone there reinforced the following…

Message from the Universe: What you naturally bring to the table is actually enough.

The Message of the Hangout Idea

This past week was also when I officially announced that I’m bringing back my free monthly telephone chats, but in a new, turbocharged, totally remodeled format — as video hangouts!

I emailed my peeps to let them know what was coming, and invited them to sign up on the special hangouts mailing list, if they want to get the login info for the hangouts, and access to the recordings afterwards.

What are these hangouts? Nothing more than me, a special guest-of-the-month, and everyone participating at that given hangout, bringing ourselves to the table. Sharing our creative process. Sharing our art, or music, or poetry. Sharing our thoughts, our tips and techniques for keeping Resistance and the Inner Critic Gremlin at bay, and getting to the important work of doing our creative thing(s).

No Get Rich Quick schemes. No Secrets of Instant Success.

Just real people, embracing our creativity and being real.

The response kinda blew me away. What had been my telephone chat list (and is now my hangouts list) increased by 37%, just like that.

Yep, people are hungry for this. (If you are too, please join us! You can sign up right here.)

Message from the Universe: What you naturally bring to the table is actually enough.

Wrapping up

There was more. The inspiring recordings inside Jennifer Louden and Michele Christenson’s truly amazing course, TeachNow. Which led me to subscribe to Susan Piver‘s newsletter. Susan’s video of this week. The conversation with my best friend in which I realized that there might possibly be some shades of grey between running myself into the ground and being comatose.

All of these and more drove home the same message from the Universe in gentle, powerful ways.

Message: I am enough.

Confession: I’d be lying if I thought my deep feeling of not being enough was permanently liquidated from this week’s serendipitous messages from the Universe. But I am starting to believe that perhaps I really am enough.

And that’s a great start.

Where can you see that you are truly enough, just as you are?

Day of Genius is just over two weeks away! The whole day is going to be great fun (watch the new video, complete with blue hair and distracting kitty, right here) and I’m especially excited about my seminar, Your Map to Happiness in 2012.

I’ve put together a workbook of fun worksheets to help Day of Genius ticket-holders get the most out of the experience, and just because I can and it’s the end of the year and holiday season and all that, I decided to share them with you, my blog readers, in a series of posts over the next couple of weeks.

The end goal? To create a colorful, collaged vision map of your goals and dreams for 2012.

We’ll be going back to kindergarten, so get ready to dig out the glue stick and crayons at the end of this series. Whether or not you’re able to join us at the Day of Genius, I hope the worksheets you find here will help get you sparked up for a creative and productive 2012!

The Power of Focusing

If you’re anything like me, your dreams and goals are all over the map (no pun intended), and there are a lot of them. If I were to lead you in a grounding & centering exercise to get you relaxed and energized, and then just set you loose to create a collage of your 2012 goals, it might be a ton of fun, but it probably wouldn’t have a lot of focus or clarity.

Just like a magnifying glass can focus the diffuse light of the sun to build up heat and actually start a fire, when you hone in and focus, you concentrate your powers in a way that not only feels more satisfying, it allows you to create much greater change.

And what we’re going after here is change! Transformation. Movement from the “now” picture, to the picture where you’re living out your biggest, wildest, most delicious dreams and goals.

It’s hard to create wonderfulness from a place of “I suck; my life sucks,” so whenever aiming for transformation, it’s a good idea to start out by noticing what’s going well already, where you already shine. In my last post I gave you a worksheet to get you focused on what you’ve already created in your life, to remind you of your power, scare off the Suck Duck, and put you in a positive frame of mind.

Today I have for you a worksheet to help you focus on the specific areas of your life where you’d like to see the most growth.

Honing in on Where You’re Out-of-Balance

Whether or not you come to the Day of Genius, if you decide to create a vision map at the end of this series of posts and worksheets, consider focusing on one or two primary areas where you’d like to see the most growth. It’s certainly not a requirement, but something to think about. (You can always make additional vision maps later to focus in on additional areas. In fact I strongly encourage it!) The Life Balance Compass worksheet will help you figure out what those primary areas are.

Have fun!

Download my free Life Balance Compass worksheet, and use it to help you identify your 8 core life priorities, and then gauge which of those directions are wanting the most care and attention right now.

When you’re done, check in with yourself — what did you learn? Did anything surprise you? How will this worksheet inform how you’ll create your vision map?

Then let me know what you thought of this exercise, either here or over on the LACL Facebook page.

And be sure to come back in a few days for the next piece (and another free worksheet)!

Did you know you could win a ticket to the Day of Genius? Just hop on over to Facebook and share your insights to any of the blog posts here that reference the Day of Genius, along with your reasons for wanting to attend, AND share and/or tweet the post, and you’ll be entered to win a full-day pass.

After the New Year, I and my panel of partial judges will pick one winner from among the commenters to join us for free. (Yes, commenting on/sharing of multiple posts will weigh heavily in your favor — we’re looking to add participants who really want to be there, so quality AND quantity will be taken into consideration.)

Girl Effect website:

Through the movement, many organizations have received the funding needed to make a huge impact in the lives of girls in developing countries. For example, the Berhane Hewan program in rural Ethiopia opened community dialogue and used incentives like school supplies to help over 11,000 girls delay marriage and stay in school. The Binti Pamoja program in Kenya is another example, offering a safe space for girls to connect with other girls and learn about reproductive health, finances and other basic life skills – through funding, the program has grown from 40 girls to over 1,000.

Let’s keep it going.

Tell me, what will you do to help the Girl Effect?

<img

I don’t care if you do it for pay, as a gift for someone else, or purely to nourish your own soul. The Universe wants you to create.

The Universe needs you to create.

What you do has value and meaning and critical importance.

Just the fact of your creating it makes it so.

I don’t care if it’s profound or fluffy, somber or silly. If it’s in you to create it, the world needs you to do so.

In my job as Inspirationalist and creative coach, I work with brilliant and talented folks of all stripes (though they rarely characterize themselves this way). I have 1:1 clients and Creative Ignition Circle members (and friends and acquaintances) who make their living from their creative efforts…

…and end up so focused on bringing in income that they stop creating to feed their own soul.

This was my own story too.

What happens when you stop feeding your own soul?

It begins to starve. It begs you for nourishment.

You may be able to silent it for a time, but ultimately you end up walking around in a state of low-grade misery.

This is not what the Universe put you on the planet to do!

Did the Universe put a fish on the planet to hike? Or a hawk on the planet to swim? Or a horse on the planet to fly?

Of course not! Fish have an innate talent for swimming; hawks for flying; horses for running. This is what they were made for. This is what they were put on the planet to do.

Anyone with any sense wouldn’t try to prevent them from doing that thing they were born for. That would just be silly. And cruel.

You, too, were born with a unique set of gifts and talents, the things that make you feel alive when you do them.

Yes, those.

The purpose of your life is to use those gifts and talents.

Anyone with any sense wouldn’t try to prevent you from doing what you were born for. That would just be silly. And cruel.

Still not convinced?

Art is more powerful and important than our ridiculous society would have us believe

Here’s an example.

A few weeks ago, I got a call about a calligraphy commission. A recent widower, who’d lost his wife in a sudden, unexpected tragedy a few weeks before, wanted a broadside (a “poster,” as he called it) for her memorial. Could I do it?

Now, I’m very selective about the commissions I take on these days. This one was a rush job, which meant my life would be rather more stressful for a couple of weeks, but it was a job that felt meaningful and interesting to me. Money was not an issue (I’d be well-compensated for my time); I’d get to play with letters in a way I rarely do these days; the man was extremely appreciative and admiring of my work – he truly valued my talents; and as he put it, “This is the last thing I can do for my wife.”

He took me to lunch, told me the story of how they’d met, and how she died. He said he knew I was the person to create her memorial piece; he had no interest in working with anyone else.

I got to work.

Working to a client’s specifications is a different animal than playing in the Creative Sandbox. If that’s all I did, I wouldn’t be happy. But when the client saw the finished piece, stopped in his tracks and almost burst into tears, I got a bit choked up myself.

“You’ve made an old man very happy,” said this man who’d recently suffered the worst loss in his life.

I couldn’t imagine that anything would make him happy right now, only weeks after losing his best friend, partner, lover, mate.

Yet my art gave him comfort, and yes, made him happy.

“I will look at this every day for the rest of my life,” he said, exuding gratitude and appreciation.

And they tell us art isn’t important?

“But that was something someone paid you to make,” you argue.

True. But the art that I make while playing in the Creative Sandbox, art that nobody commissioned and paid for, makes me happy.

And I get emails and tweets on a regular basis from people who have been moved and inspired by the creations I send out in my not-quite-daily ArtSpark newsletter and the videos I post YouTube. And when I perform in public as a jazz singer/songwriter/Uke Diva, people invariably thank me.

I’m not saying this to promote myself, but to encourage, embolden and empower you to get to that creative thing that’s calling to you.

You have no idea whose lives your work might touch, what difference it might make to them.

You do know one person it will make happy, though: you.

The Talmud says “if you save one life, it is as if you had saved the whole world.” I suspect the rabbis who wrote this were talking about the physical saving of lives; the difference between life and death. But I’ll go ahead and take the liberty of applying it a bit more broadly.

If you save one life from low-grade misery – your own – it is as if you had saved the whole world.

Is that not enough?

Tell me, what are your unique gifts and talents, and how are you going to use them to save your own life?

<img

There never was a moment, and never will be, when we are without the power to alter our destiny. This second, we can turn the tables on Resistance.
This second, we can sit down and do our work.

~ Steven Pressfield, The War of Art

Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art has been on my “must read” list for longer than I can remember. I’m not sure what took me so long to just buy the damn book and read it (Resistance, anyone?), but if, like me, you’ve been on the fence with this one, don’t wait. Just jump. Quick.

Far from the heavy tome I feared it would be, The War of Art is a little gem of a book. It’s short enough to be consumed in one long or a few not-so-long sittings, and divided into tiny, bite-sized “chapters” of no more than a couple of pages, and often as short as a couple of sentences.

In other words, totally non-intimidating.

It’s the kind of book you’ll want to keep within arm’s reach in your creative workspace, to flip open to a random page when you need a little boost. A little reminder of how freaking important your creative work is, and that you’re not alone, or crazy, for having maybe the teensiest bit of a hard time getting to said work.

That last phrase? Totally sarcastic.

The truth is, if you’re like 99.999% of us, you frequently have an excruciatingly painful feels-like-you’re-pushing-a-three-ton-boulder-up-a-hill hard time getting to said work.

Or getting said work to a state of done-ness.

And The War of Art? This deceptively brief, easy to approach little 165-page gift is a powerful tool to add to your arsenal (to borrow Pressfield’s war metaphor) against the stealthiest, sliest and most pernicious enemy to your creative life: Resistance.

The Truth About Resistance

Resistance, in its many shapes, is the focus of Book One, the first of three sections of The War of Art. Pressfield lifts the veil, exposing the ways Resistance keeps us from the work we’re meant to do, including some you may never have thought about.

Fear? Procrastination? It’s pretty easy to spot those manifestations of Resistance. But how about support and healing? How about the choice of a mate? These – and many other surprises – can be sneaky forms of Resistance too.

And have you ever thought about Resistance and love? Has it ever occurred to you that the more Resistance you feel, the more important your “unmanifested art / project / enterprise” is to you? Which means, of course, that when you feel the most Resistance, that’s precisely when you must fight the hardest against it.

You must play for keeps.

Which brings me to Book Two.

Turning Pro

In Book Two, Pressfield offers his thinking and instructions on how best to combat Resistance: by “Turning Pro.”

“Pro” in this sense doesn’t have anything to do with producing income (though it certainly can include that). It means taking yourself and your dreams seriously.

It means dedicating your life to your art / your project / your enterprise.

It means accepting that it is hard and painful to keep at it… and doing it anyway.

“The artist must be like [a] Marine,” says Pressfield:

He has to know how to be miserable. He has to take pride in being more miserable than any other soldier or swabbie or jet jockey. Because this is war, baby. And war is hell.

Turning Pro means showing up, no matter what, just like you do to collect your paycheck at your 9-5.

It means a lot of other stuff, too, which Book Two beautifully enumerates.

Pressman has made Turning Pro into an art in and of itself. He shares stories from his own life, when Resistance had him broken and beaten down, and in glimmering vignettes describes how a shift in consciousness – from “amateur” to “pro” – was what finally turned things around.

A guy who goes from broken, can’t-get-his-work-done-to-save-his-life, to international best-selling author is someone worth paying attention to.

The Higher Realm

If the militaristic message of Book Two sounds daunting, deep breath – we’re now on to Book Three, where Pressman looks at Inspiration, the Muses, the Authentic Self, and the allies and angels that keep us pressing on against Resistance.

When we sit down each day and do our work, power concentrates around us. The Muse takes note of our dedication. She approves. We have earned favor in her sight. When we sit down and work, we become like a magnetized rod that attracts iron filings. Ideas come. Insights accrete.

Whether you believe in angels or read Book Three as pure metaphor, I can’t see how any reader could not be moved by it.

Do your work, is the essence of Pressman’s message, because you must. The last page sums it up eloquently:

If you were meant to cure cancer or write a symphony or crack cold fusion and you don’t do it, you not only hurt yourself, even destroy yourself. You hurt your children. You hurt me. You hurt the planet….

Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. It’s a gift to the world and every being in it. Don’t cheat us of your contribution. Give us what you’ve got.

Amen.

If you’re ready to take your own creative life more seriously, and would like to use the power of a small group of like-minded, creative comrades-in-arms to push yourself forward, I’ve got one spot left in my upcoming daytime Creative Ignition Circle, which starts this Wednesday. What could YOU accomplish toward your big, creative dreams in the next two months, if you had other people to brainstorm, encourage, and (perhaps most importantly) hold your feet to the fire? I invite and challenge you to take that next step to bust past Resistance and find out. <a

That hippy, trippy hanging plant-holder craft from the 70s? I thought so too, until I saw Cecilia Power’s amazing work over at cilipower.wordpress.com. Cecilia turns knots into modern works of art.

The piece at the left is just one example – click the link above to see more.

Cecilia also writes lovely emails (did I mention I love getting email from subscribers?)

I just wanted you to know I have been reading everything you have been throwing my way… I have been checking out quite a few artists and it has been an inspiring endeavor. All in all between you and them, I’m all afire, (chuckle) and feeling hopeful.

THAT is exactly what I like to hear!
<hr

A group challenge is a great way to do it! Here are three challenges going on RIGHT NOW that you can participate in (or just enjoy from the sidelines and contemplate taking part next time).

Customer Love

Today is the first day of the #customerlove challenge. I’ve signed up to spend 28 days basically being awesome and putting lots of love out there in the world. (I mean, like, consciously. Not like I don’t do this all the time, people. I mean, really.)

The goal? To make customers love you.

It’s LaVonne Ellis‘s creative response to Naomi Dunford’s post “Make Them Love You. THEN Ask For Money.”

The upshot? Lay the groundwork. Or, in Naomi’s words:

Spend the first 28 days being totally, ridiculously awesome. Plan to make 100% of your money on the 29th day.

Spend 28 days being insanely active on Twitter or Facebook or your local small biz networking scene. Spend 28 days making killer contacts on LinkedIn or at the local flower shops or a few select forums. Spend 28 days loudly creating tactical, useful content on your blog or YouTube or, hell, Facebook notes.

Make friends as if your life depended on it. Be helpful. Give lots of shoutouts. Send link love. Generally be the nicest, coolest, smartest kid in school.

Then, on the last day, ask for the money. Launch your consulting sale or your custom deck design sale or your half price classes or whatever at the last possible moment.

So that’s what I’m doing this month.

Wanna join me? You can still register and download the (incredibly awesome) free e-book here.

NaNoWriMo

Today is also the first day of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), an annual creative writing project in which registrants commit to writing an entire novel in a month.

50,000 words. 175 pages.

Yep. Crazy, huh?

But according to Wikipedia (the NaNoWriMo site being unavailable at the time I was looking), in 2009 170,000 people took part.

My friend Fawn is doing it, and hell, if you’re ambitious and a little crazy, you can too!

I’m… not. But then I’m a little busy with other stuff…

Art Every Day Month

Eight years ago, inspired by NaNoWriMo, artist Leah Piken Kolidas challenged herself to make a piece of art every day. The following year she invited others to join her, and at the time of this writing there are 235 people signed up for this year’s challenge.

Participants post their daily creations on their Flikr account (though you don’t actually need a blog OR a Flikr account to participate!)

Sign up for Art Every Day Month here.

—–

Once you start searching for challenges they start popping up everywhere. Know of any you want to share? Post them in the comments below.

Now go get creating!
