As in, you’re pulling the wool over your own eyes.
But don’t worry, I’ve been in your shoes. I know “I don’t have time” syndrome only too well.
For over a decade, while I was making my living from my art, I almost never created just for me. I was so busy creating for other people that I just didn’t have time!
Or that was what I told myself, until the fateful day when I interviewed an artist for a project I was doing. This was an artist who mentors other artists who want professional gallery careers, and she was sharing what she tells her mentees when they complain about not having time for their art:
If you can’t put fifteen minutes a day into your art, you’re making an excuse.
BUSTED!
I suddenly realized that this was exactly what I’d been doing: making an excuse. I’d been deceiving myself all those years. I mean, seriously, if you literally cannot make fifteen minutes for the thing you love, that means you’re either in a full-body cast or locked up in prison somewhere.
Because here’s the thing: it’s not about having the time, or even finding the time. If you wait until you have the time, you’ll be on your deathbed before you get to it.
No, it’s about making the time.
And it doesn’t even have to be that much time to make a big difference. Sure, we all want great, big chunks of time, but we so rarely get great, big chunks of time. In the meantime, why not feed your poor, malnourished creative spirit with fifteen minutes (or even five minutes, or one minute)?
One thing that helped me a lot was to reclaim a sense of permission to play.
