She told us last night, over sushi,
how she’s losing a job, a 25-year friendship.
The table was quiet, sobered.
I thought of my own lost friendships,
some that faded slowly,
others, one-sided, that I weeded from my friendship garden
after painful deliberation.
Still others where I, apparently, was deemed the weed,
left to wither, then finally yanked out by the roots.
Losses, all of them.
Yet I gained from them too, even if only
in self-awareness and cautionary tales.

This is really great! I stepped away from a job almost 3 months ago that wasn’t in line with my values and having this time off to reassess my goals and how to get to the next job have really helped me get a clear perspective on what I want in life. Losing was definitely a gain and I’m so much better for it… stronger somehow.

Boy, nothing like a loss like that to help you reassess, huh? I’m glad to hear the loss turned into a gain for you, Heather. 🙂
