When I was small and something scared me a little — a new person, a new place — it was so comforting to hide behind my mother’s skirt. She was bigger, she would protect me like a mama bear.
I could cling to her leg and just peek out at the new, intriguing thing, that I wanted to interact with… but was just a little too scared to.
The space beyond the edge of this painting is like that for Shy Rabbit. Maybe eventually confidence will rein, but for now Shy Rabbit can hide behind the nothingness and just peek out at the colorful wonders inside the painting.
And don’t we all want something like that sometimes?
