Scribbly morning doodles, coming up with image ideas for the monthly themes for the Creative Sandbox Way™ Leadership Academy inside the Creative Sandbox Community. Each month we’ll host discussions around the topic of the month, recommend targeted resources, and provide additional content for members who wish to dive deeper. 🖍
I’m also opening up my podcast interviews to Creative Sandbox Community members, who can participate as part of the live “studio audience.” The first recording is tomorrow, with @julialinsteadt of KidArtLit— so excited!

154: Paul McCarthy Is the British Ninja
Paul and I shared insomnia complaints before I started the recording, and then dove right into a conversation about his work as the “British Ninja” at UCLA.
As the Martial Arts Coordinator, Paul provides martial arts classes and clubs for the community at UCLA, and gets to do “fun things” like the UCLA Martial Arts & Wellness Symposium, as well.
He’s been into martial arts since seeing The Karate Kid as a kid himself (though he didn’t really get started until about age 15).
Here are some highlights from our conversation:
Martial Arts & Play
Martial arts is so disciplined, it seems almost like martial arts and play are a dichotomy.
- Any activity can be play: it’s not the activity, it’s the environment and the expression that make it play.
- A place where you can really bounce off each other and discover new things.
- Trust and safety are paramount.
- There’s no result, reward, or prize in play.
Play vs. Work
When I doodle for my own pleasure, I’m using the same tools, and making essentially the same kinds of marks, as when I made art for clients back when I was a professional artist. But when I made art for clients it was definitely work, not play. My doodles are play.
Paul shared the example of Alex Acuña, professional drummer. When he drums professionally, it’s work. When he drums for fun at the dojo, it’s play.
Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation
Drive, by Daniel Pink (aff link – or click here for a non-aff link)
Giving an extrinsic reward for a task that is inherently enjoyable (like drawing) makes people less motivated to do that task!
Autonomy, mastery, empowerment are more effective motivators than money.
Some Definitions of Play
United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child, Article 31 General Comment
“Voluntary attempt to overcome an unnecessary challenge.” -Bernard Suits
“A brief respite from the tyranny of apparent purpose.” -Jill Vialet
Play Isn’t Just for Kids!
There’s this thing called plasticity! It is now accepted as scientific fact that play is essential for children’s brains, but our brains don’t stop learning at adolescence! Our brains grow and learn until we die.
Play Is NOT the Opposite of Work!
Google’s 20% time — most of Google’s largest revenue-generating programs came from 20% time, when there was no pressure. Right out of the U.N. handbook on play. And yet so few people are connecting the dots on the science!
There’s a big gap between what we know and what we do.
Wright Brothers vs. the well-funded guy, who quit as soon as the Wright Brothers got their plane in the air, because all he cared about was being the first.
Well Beyond Summit Video:
About Paul
Paul has been studying movement and martial arts for over 20 years. He holds black belts in martial arts including Kali, Hapkido & Taekwondo and is also an instructor of Savate, Muay Thai and Jeet Kune Do.
With an MS from Indiana University in Kinesiology and his experience coaching, teaching and managing various movement practices, Paul is fascinated by what makes the body ‘tick’.
He is currently working with Neuroscience Professors at UCLA, University of Victoria and University of Illinois to study how martial arts movement patterns improve cognitive function.
Paul’s philosophy is that movement is vital to a happy and healthy life and training in multiple movement modalities is the best way to achieve that life!

The Half-of-March Challenge inside the #creativesandboxcommunity is helping me practice #imperfectionism, because I give myself the goal of seeing how quickly I can create to the prompt, NOT how well. 🖍
This is key! Giving myself a very small time container! @carla.la.la.olson, the challenge host, suggested 5 minutes, and reminded us to use this challenge as an opportunity to be brave and vulnerable together. EXACTLY the spirit I want to cultivate inside the Sandbox! 👍👍👍
🖍
So here I am, being brave and vulnerable by sharing outside the Sandbox, on Instagram. 🖍
Let’s not kid ourselves: sharing work, especially when it’s a newer skill that you don’t feel confident in, is SCARY! That is flexing some major courage muscles!
🖍
THAT is why the Creative Sandbox Community is a Lab for women’s leadership. Those courage muscles that we flex when we create and share creative work? It’s those same muscles that we use when we ask the boss for a raise.
🖍
Or throw our hat in the ring to run for office.
🖍
Or take on ANY big challenge that requires you to step into a bigger space than you’re used to occupying.
🖍
Creative work is a microcosm of the rest of life. What we can accomplish in our creative lives strengthens us to accomplish amazing things in the other parts of our lives.

Some days are finished products (which I may or may not feel pleased with), and other days are drills (which I also may or may not feel pleased with). That’s the life of a student learning a new creative skill. Gremlins abound in all corners. Your job is to continually send them off to get pedicures so you can get back to work.

More Visual Shownotes™ from the Jordan Harbinger Show, with @jordanharbinger and Tali Sharot on the Science of the Influential Mind.
I love practicing visual notes to Jordan’s podcast because he A) Gets such fascinating guests; B) Does a great job interviewing them; and C) Has terrific show notes that I can crib for my Visual Notes™! 😅
No joke—learning a new skill is hard! I’m juggling multiple skills here, each of which needs a lot of work:
🖍
– lettering (not just well, but also quickly! Gahhh!)
– drawing (again, not just drawing, but also quickly! Gahhh!)
– capturing IDEAS quickly, and translating them into visual metaphors
– listening, listening, listening, and holding onto content that is rolling by while I’m trying to capture content that *just* rolled by
🖍
It’s what I imagine juggling 5 balls at a time must be like. (And since I can’t even juggle ONE ball, well, you get the idea!)
🖍
I’m not aiming to become a professional graphic recorder. My goal is to bring more visuals into my workshops and trainings. So I’m not “cheating” by using podcasts to practice with. In fact, I see it as a great double-win: I get to practice, AND I get to listen to podcasts I enjoy while I’m at it. 😊
