Sometimes I am astonished at the pure delight I feel from something I create. Something TINY and SIMPLE.
Like this little spirally thing. Rough hewn, small, imperfect, improvised. A doodle of a few minutes with my 05 #PigmaMicron while sitting up in bed–part of my “tiny and daily” #creativesandboxway morning ritual.
A small daily act of letting myself PLAY, without concern for the outcome.
And sometimes, a gift: utter delight!
Like bubbles rising in a glass of champagne. Make-me-giddy kind of delight!
This NEVER used to happen during the years when I grasped desperately after greatness. Instead, I only got mired in perfectionist paralysis! ?
So stuck in “I’ll never be good enough” that I couldn’t even start!
Only when I finally let go of my perfectionism and allowed myself to make crap (because, of course, as I finally realized, we need the crap to fertilize the good stuff!) did I become free.
Only when I let go of perfectionism and allowed myself to make crap did I find delight in the weird work that started to bubble out of me.
Only when I let go of perfectionism and allowed myself to make crap did I “find my voice,” which we’re all trying to do, right?
You won’t find your voice by thinking about it, I’ll tell you that much. You’ve got to USE IT.
You’ve got to let yourself SUCK, and then have the courage to look at what you created with neutral eyes, because THAT is where the gold is, somewhere inside the “crap” you think you created.
And some of it *may* be crap, but some of it is going to be manure. And some of it is going to be GOLD.
And some of it, if you have the courage to persevere through the frustration when it isn’t instantly brilliant, some of it will eventually make your toes tingle with delight.
Some of it will send champagne bubbles of delight up your spine.
THAT is the power of small daily acts.

Go make a light in the darkness today. Fight oppression, just like the Maccabees did, model kindness just like Jesus did.
Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas.
