When I start a new doodle, I usually have no preconceived ideas—I just make a mark. That first mark then defines what will come next. It forms a “rule” that must then be followed, and the next mark adds to that rule. The rest of the drawing is an exploration of what I can do within the parameters set by those first marks.
Today’s parameters are pretty easy to see. Simple, but surprisingly fun to play with.
Try it yourself! It’s improv on paper (though, in fact, I use the same exact method when making music or creating scenes onstage with one of my improv groups). In short: make a box, then make sure everything that comes next fits inside the box. Or if it doesn’t fit inside, that it acknowledges the existence of the box and relates to it somehow.
So much fun!
