Flying critters showed up in my morning doodle today! It’s been awhile since critters have appeared in my doodles. I must say it made me happy. I love it when my doodles surprise and delight me. ?

Teeny tiny morning doodle. The pull to just get going already is SO STRONG, but I know I need a little doodle magic to keep me sane and help me face the day.
Especially with all the construction noise!
And sure enough, it’s amazing how much calmer and happier I feel after even just a few minutes of doodling.
That is the power of #doodlemagic! ?

LCN 129: My Yom Kippur Screwup (Or How to Make a Not-So-Awesome Experience Awesome)

Last Saturday was Yom Kippur, and just like every year, I co-led the 3 1/2 hour service with another lay leader at my synagogue.
Neither of us is a rabbi, or a cantor, but every year we get to “play one on TV” for the crowd who shows up for High Holy Days.
Because that’s the relationship that most American Jews have with synagogues: they show up once a year for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (collectively known as the High Holy Days).
And that has become my own relationship with my synagogue: I show up and lead services.
Usually I get together with my co-leader a few weeks in advance to go over the service, plan out who’s going to do what, put sticky notes in my book, remind myself of the melodies, and basically rehearse.
But this year there was no [Read more…]

Getting a little morning doodling in before packing up the downstairs for tomorrow’s bamboo flooring installation.
Yes, finally! I just did some mental calculations and realized we’ve been living in this state of home renovation limbo for SIX MONTHS!
Oven range in the dining room, dishwasher in the back yard, plywood subfloor under our feet in the kitchen, for SIX MONTHS!
Time flies when you’re having fun, eh? ?
Chaos increases this week as all our downstairs stuff goes into boxes, and the dog-poop-stained carpet (finally) gets torn out.
Then the bamboo goes in and by next week order will gradually be restored!
I cannot wait!
Meanwhile, art helps me retain my sanity. ?

From today’s Doodlecam, in which I equated my Doodle process with the process of doing improv, starting with the principle of “Yes, And,” which boils down to accepting the reality of what’s there and building upon it.
This is *exactly* what I do when I doodle.
I accept the reality is what’s on the page, and I respond to that reality. Either by adding something similar, or by adding something that contrasts in some way.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
As the piece grows, the choices feel more complicated, but it all boils down to this:
Accept the reality of what’s there and respond to it.
In improv, this means accepting your scene partner’s offer, and adding to it. “Yes, and…” It doesn’t mean you literally say yes, just that you accept the reality of the world that’s been created onstage.
And in your art, it operates the same way. Accept the reality that is showing up in front of you, and respond to *that*. Build on *that*. Not the platonic ideal of what you wish it were, but what’s really in front of you. Let it simply be what it is, and add to it.
THAT is my doodle practice.
Of course there is no wrong (Creative Sandbox Way Guidepost #1), and the goal is to think process, not product (Guidepost #2). And if I start getting too precious, afraid I’m going to “ruin it,” I remind myself of Guidepost #7: “Take the riskier path!” Because after all, it’s only a piece of paper! Nobody’s going to die if I mess up in the Creative Sandbox!
