Today’s improvisational doodle, from my most recent Instagram Story. Or what I’m now calling “Doodling as a Spiritual Practice.” 🖍
In 10 or 15 minutes in the morning I practice doing with a pen and paper what I’ve spent years learning to do (or, rather, I’m *still* learning to do) with my improv partners:
– notice more
– accept (and embrace) what’s there
– respond to *that*
– dismiss the gremlins (that’s Creative Sandbox Way™ Guidepost #8, in case you’ve been keeping track)
– not worry about whether I like it or hate it, but stay grounded in the *process* (“Think process, not product” is Guidepost #2)
– stay out of my head and be in the moment!
🖍
Whether it’s on the page or on the stage, it’s the same process! And guess what, all those principles apply in regular life, too. If you can respond to the reality of what’s there in your regular life, you are WAY ahead of the curve! That’s one of the reasons doodling—this kind of improvisational doodling—truly is a spiritual practice. Give it a try! It has profoundly changed my life. Your mileage may vary, but it might change yours, too. 😊
