From @dianebleck ‘s #sketchbookbasics inside the #doodleinstitute, the assignment was to doodle your top 5 values. The hardest part is narrowing down my top 5! So I had to qualify as my top 5 of the moment (a lady gets to change her mind, of course. ?) The other challenge is preventing my perfectionist gremlins from creeping in and taking over!
I’ve been in improv mode for so long, that going back to “now I must plot things out and compose before I begin” is dangerous territory!
It’s easy to get sucked into the “tweak-tweak-tweak-tweak FOREVER UNTIL IT’S PERFECT” trap.
I had to remind myself that the assignment was to DOODLE my values. Not to make a masterpiece.
What IF I let it be an improvisational doodle?
I didn’t actually do that, but I DID let go of the perfectionist tweaking, and split the difference.
There are lots of things I’d change to make it better, but I’m sure that would be the case if I’d agonized over the layout before doing the finished piece, too. Except that way I wouldn’t have enjoyed the process nearly as much!! My goal is to be fully improvisational. A sketchnoter! No advance layouts involved there–just GO! Some will come out better than others. And overall, the quality of work will rise as you do it, because you learn from your experience.
So today was one experience. Tomorrow will be another.
