#fridayfun Here’s a secret for everyone who thinks “I can’t draw”: Visual communication is much more about METAPHOR than about #drawing skills.
In the drawing tutorial image here, I’ve used the metaphor of a broken chain to communicate the idea “weak,” as in “weak link.” All with VERY simple shapes!
Even the shading in the final example is unnecessary to communicate the idea (but it’s fun and easy to learn! 😊) And notice none of my chains are identical. IT DOESN’T MATTER!
#visualcommunication is not about making amazing art; it’s about communicating IDEAS. Period.

If you can hold a pen, you can draw to communicate. —

Here’s a sort of random one. I was writing a LinkedIn post about a company that offers its employees a way to play “lunch roulette”—they made a website that where you can plug in a date and location, and be matched with another employee, all for the purposes of cross-pollination, to help build a more innovative culture. So I wanted to draw “roulette.” 🖍
What I enjoy about #visualcommunication, as opposed to realism — trying to reproduce something as realistically as possible (which I’ve also spent time doing, and which can also be really fun) is the challenge of figuring out how *little* I can do to communicate an idea.

It’s not about making the drawing look like a photograph (for one thing, if you’re taking notes that would take way too long!), it’s about expressing a concept quickly and efficiently. And ideally elegantly, too. 😊

In this case, some stacks of chips helped. And when in doubt, adding a word or words will *always* add clarity! 👍 (Donkey looks more like a dog? No problem! Just add a label and all becomes clear.)

As with all things design-related, it’s all about finding a solution to a problem. The problem being “how to communicate X in pictures?” It’s a fun challenge! 😊
