Creation Notes:

Sometimes I have to meditate awhile before I’m clear on what words a piece is wanting to say. And even then, I don’t even always know where the words come from. I tried out several other word possibilities on this piece, but nothing stuck until I wrote “spirit rises.” It feels right, and yet I can’t quite articulate what it means to me. Tell me, what does it mean to you?

Step By Step

Creation Notes:

Brushing water on top of a dried wash of walnut ink is what created the squares and blobs on this piece. Although at first I was annoyed at the way the paper soaked up the water and distorted my lovely squares, this actually became one of my favorite parts of this piece.

Anything worth doing — whether a work of art or world peace — is accomplished one step at a time, and those steps are rarely as clean or clear as a perfect square. It’s the doing of them that matters.

Creation Notes:

The walnut ink I used for this piece was from a dish still “dirty” with gold ink, so the brown square sparkles with flecks of bronze powder. Fit for a blessing, indeed.
