I think the most fun part is when I make a random shape with no preconceived idea of what kind of critter it will be, and then I find the critter inside the shape. Often there is more than one possible critter in there—one part could be either a tail or a head, or possibly a limb, or a lower jaw.
There’s often a moment of panic that this shape can’t possibly work. But when I let myself think like a 4-year-old, there’s always something I can find.
It might be facing away from me. It might bear no relation to any real creature I’ve ever seen.
Once I let go of the panic this is where it gets the most fun. After all, who says my doodle critters need to look like real animals? How boring Dr. Seuss would have been if his creatures looked like every other animal drawing you’d ever seen.
