While there are things I wish were better here (that last e is way too small!), I’m still really pleased with how this came out. I wish I’d captured making the dot in the descender of the J on video, but I didn’t add it until I’d turned the video off.

Pen: Gillott 303

Ink: Ziller Midnight Blue, diluted with water. (I LOVE Ziller inks! They’re super concentrated, so you can dilute them and still get rich colors; they behave beautifully; you can use them like watercolor; and they’re WATERPROOF! This Midnight Blue Ziller and walnut ink together make one of my favorite combinations. The walnut ink is super water soluble, so you can get really interesting effects with the two together, and when they blend, the color range is amazing — blues, greens and browns. Luscious!) I am in LOVE with that B!

Notice the rocking motion I use with this ruling pen–that’s what gives thicks and thins. On a thin upstroke, I literally twist the pen, by pushing my thumb toward my pinkie (try it, to understand what I’m talking about). This movement makes writing with a ruling pen fairly natural, though depending on what kind of ruling pen you have, your results may vary. Experiment and play–that’s always the best prescription. ?
