Today was Creative Sandbox Community Virtual Playday, my birthday celebration edition, and this is what I made. 😊 🖍
20+ participants made art together, shared resources, and cheered each other on. The variety of work created was stunning and inspiring, and I am excited to do it again!
🖍
This is the kind of community we foster inside the Creative Sandbox Community. One of the participants today shared that her gremlins made her think she’s probably not as talented as the members of the Sandbox, but one of the members piped in, “no, no, no—we are supporting each other, including those comparison traps we *all* get caught up in periodically. Of course everyone brings different strengths and is at different points in their creative process/evolution, but it’s more about linking elbows and encouraging each other.”
🖍
I couldn’t have said it better myself. 😊

Big decisions rattling around in my head are making me feel like this tangly knot doodle. All tied up in knots! I’ll get to the other side, but it will take awhile. 🖍

I’m currently in the middle of reassessing my morning routine. I *was* starting off with my shoulder rehab/strength training first thing, which I loved—it got me in a good frame of mind, got my workout out of the way and done, and set me up to meditate next. But… I found that I wasn’t always getting to my art. Sigh…
🖍
Lately I’ve been back to journaling and doodling first thing, which puts me in a great frame of mind mentally… but then I don’t always get to my workout and meditation! Sigh…
🖍
Of course, there is an obvious solution: go to bed at 9pm and get up at 4am! 😂 Yeah, right…
🖍
What’s your morning routine?
🖍
Meanwhile, join me this Saturday, November 17th, for my birthday celebration and Virtual Playday! Watch me make art and share my process, make your own art right alongside me, and ask any questions you might have (about anything at all!) 🖍

184: Listener Spotlight: Jumping All In with Anne Marie Rowley

Since she was a child, Anne Marie Rowley was fascinated with music, photography and art, but never thought it was good enough to “put it out there.” However, after going through some major life changes, Anne Marie has been starting to put her work out in public spaces and use it as a conversation starter to think about the next phase of her life.
When she heard my interview on The Type A Creative podcast, something cracked open for Anne Marie. It was the first time she heard someone give her permission to be a passion pluralite and discuss the problem of perfectionist paralysis, as well as the importance of being curious.
So she started bingeing on my podcast!
She began using art to make sense of all the changes in her life, and to answer some life questions. Then she heard me speak about “putting it out there,” and she has jumped in!
She says, “Since listening to you and Jenni [Heffernan Brown] a few months ago I tried painting and even wrote poetry that I read at an open mic… not good poetry but poetry.” [Read more…]

Tuesday morning doodle. All tied in knots. Actually, this is about how the left side of my back feels this morning, now that I think of it: all tied in knots. Major spasm since Sunday night—ugh! 😜 Hopefully doing my shoulder rehab will help. I’ll try rolling on a rubber ball for a bit first, to try and loosen up the spasmy muscles. 🖍
In any case, making art always puts me in a good mood and lowers my blood pressure. Doing this doodle made me so happy! I did it in a sketchbook instead of on a postcard. I decided to take all the pressure off—this doodle is unlikely to be sent to anyone, so if truly is pure creative sandbox play. Just for me. And guess what? That’s almost always when my best stuff comes out! 😅 Or at least my most free stuff. Which is usually my best stuff. 🖍
How can you free yourself up to play more? For me, it was switching back to a sketchbook today. What about you?
