As a creativity instigator, I hear from people all the time about the biggest obstacles that get in the way, that keep them from doing their creative things.
One of the most common ones is time.
“I don’t have time.” “I don’t have enough time.” “I can’t find the time.” “I’m not making the time.”
Really, all of these have very little to do with time. We all have the same amount of time.
So then it comes down to priorities, right? You’re choosing to spend your time on X rather than on Y.

After yesterday’s imaginary sailing ship, I got curious about what a real sailing ship looks like, and how to draw one. So I Googled it! Found a great little tutorial, and this is the result, thumbnail size (almost literally, as you can see! 😄) 🖍
I won’t have time when I’m doing visual notes to draw something like this—it takes WAY too long—but I like having a better understanding of HOW to draw a (somewhat more accurate) sailing ship. Now I can use that info to come up with a compromise version that works for me. 😊

It’s a new monthly creative challenge inside my Creative Sandbox Community! The theme this month, hosted by @carla.la.la.olson, is “Atlas Obscura.” I’m using it as an opportunity to practice visual communication. Today’s prompt: voyage.

You can see I didn’t actually model this on a real ship (schooner? Whaler? I have no idea!!!), but it still gets the point across. 🖍
Which IS precisely the point. Visual communication is not about photographic realism, or “fine art.” It’s about communicating IDEAS and CONCEPTS. If you can do that, it doesn’t matter how beautiful, or even how accurate, your drawings are! As long as they are accurately UNDERSTOOD, they are doing the job.
