Reception

I had a transistor radio as a kid that was small enough to fit in my hand. It had a nifty wrist strap, so I could carry it around, and a little serrated dial sticking out the side to adjust the volume, and another for the station.
In the 70s, that was the height of hip tech.
I’d fiddle with those dials to get that crackling, staticky reception that only transistor radios could give you, and when I finally grabbed a clear channel for a moment, it was as if the heavens parted.

Growing

Did you ever grow plants from seeds as a kid? I remember putting beans (lima beans??) in soil in a clear plastic cup, then watching as nothing happened, and nothing happened, and nothing happened… and then it sprouted!!
Magic.
There’s a particular species of bamboo, the Chinese Bamboo Tree, that does nothing for five full years, then grows up to 90 feet in just five weeks.
I like to remember that when I’m feeling like things aren’t moving in my life. Maybe I’m like Chinese Bamboo, just waiting for the right time to sprout.

Meeting

“I want to be the mom.”
“I want to be the baby.”
“Hey, I want to be the baby!”
“You’re always the baby! It’s my turn!”
“What about if you’re both the baby? I can have two babies!”
Such were the meetings of my childhood. For some reason they felt ever so much more important than many of the meetings I’ve had as an adult.
(Though if I could meet with these three? With magic falling from the sky? Now that would be a rockin’ meeting!)

The year I matriculated at UC Berkeley, I was so ready to go to college. I’d spent a “gap year” living at home, dancing 4 1/2 to 6 hours a day at a private dance studio, and butting heads with my mom.
My parents and my older brother helped me pile my belongings into our 1976 orange VW bus (with orange shag carpet!), then the four of us drove across the San Francisco Bay, to my new home in the UC Berkeley dorms, where we unloaded and shlepped all of my stuff into my room.
Like a chick being pushed out of the nest, I was ready to fly, but I was also scared. My stomach churned with that unique blend of excitement, possibility, and holy terror of the unknown.
